What are Stink Bugs and Where do They Live?

Stink bugs or the Halymorpha halys are an invasive species that was accidentally introduced to Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1996 from shipping containers from China. Invasive species are organisms that don’t originate in the area and are introduced to other people typically by transportation of goods between countries. The species has since been introduced to Virginia with the first known introduction in 2004 followed by another in 2010. They are ¾ inch long insects with white bands on their legs and antennae and white and black spots on their abdomen.  They are grayish-brown in color and have hard shell, shield-like backs.

Stink bugs have glands located on the underside of their abdomens and thorax. Stink bugs prefer warmer climates. Stink bugs eat vegetables and fruits and can sometimes feed on soybeans and corn. They don’t lay their eggs inside of homes or structures, but instead lay their eggs outside on the underside of leaves. Female stink bugs lay 30-100 eggs at a given time and 300 eggs in a single season. They arrange them on the leaves in dozens of tight clusters and neat rows. The eggs are barrel-shaped and can vary in color but are typically light green. Stink bugs reproduce various times throughout the year and are dormant during the winter and active during the springtime.

These insects are most often present in the autumn because they will begin their overwintering process. Overwintering is when an organism will wait out the winter weather in a warm environment such as a home. During the fall, the insects will begin to find a place that they can overwinter and that is why you may see them in the fall and winter more than typical. Stink bugs like warm habitats and will live under stones, ground covers, boards and in weeds during the winter time. The easiest way to know you have a stink bug problem is to smell them. They will congregate in warm areas of your home. Stink bugs will stay in your home through the entire winter and then will leave the home in the spring when it becomes warm again. When there are stink bugs in your home or on your property, you should know about the potential damage they cause.

What Damage Can Stink Bugs Cause?丨Summit Pest Control

Stink bugs are called stink bugs because they emit a strong unpleasant scent from their gland when they feel threatened. They will emit scent on people, pets, animals and other insects in order to protect themselves. Other than their scent, stink bugs  are harmless to people and animals and aren’t toxic and don’t sting. In addition to producing a stinky odor, they can cause damage, especially to crops. Their feeding habits cause blemishes on fruits and vegetables which can lead to up to 50% of crop losses and bacterial and fungal infections that can destroy the plants. Stink bugs are resistant to topical insecticides and it is exceedingly difficult to get rid of them. While stink bugs are harmful to crops, they don’t cause property damage like termites and carpenter bees do. Ultimately, no one wants to have to deal with these insects and there are some ways to deter them from areas and make sure they don’t come back.

What are Some Methods for Stink Bug Prevention and Control in Northern Virginia?

Preventing stink bugs from entering your home is an easy process that can save you a lot of time and money.  One way to prevent stink bugs from entering your home is to make sure there are no holes or gaps in your home where the insects can enter. You should also inspect screens, block off points of entry and check doors to ensure they don’t have a way to get into your home. Stink bugs are difficult to remove and because they are an invasive species that haven’t been here very long, there are still a lot of things about them that we don’t know and understand about them.

Some proven methods for the prevention and removal of stink bugs are the use of essential oils such as mint and neem oil. Some alternatives are garlic spray, soapy water, fly tape or vacuuming up the bugs. The use of chemical-based pesticides should be avoided because not only are they ineffective on stink bugs but they are potentially dangerous for you and your family. In addition to pesticides being ineffective, the predators to stink bugs are not present in Virginia, so there is  an abundance of them and they can reproduce quickly which causes the population to grow steadily. The best thing you can do in terms of prevention and control of stink bugs is to hire a professional pest control company like Summit Pest Control.
